Beauvoir may accept statue of Jefferson Davis

Beauvoir - Last Home of President Jefferson Davis

Beauvoir

Earlier this month I wrote about the statue of Jefferson Davis that the Sons of Confederate Veterans wanted to give to the state of Mississippi to be display on the statehouse grounds.  You can find that post by clicking here.  It turns out that if the statue won’t be displayed at the Capitol it still may find its home in Mississippi.

Beauvoir is interested in displaying the statue as part of its collection.  Beauvoir was the last home of President Davis and is located near Biloxi, it houses Jefferson Davis’ presidential library and a museum. Since the state capitol deal does not look likely, Beauvoir says they would love the opportunity to have it.  Richard Forte, director, says the statue looks as if it is welcoming people to Beauvoir.

The statue depicts President Davis along with his son Joe Davis and an African American child named Jim Limber.  Limber was adopted by the Davis’s during the war.

Beauvoir mean “beautiful to view” and consists of the plantation style residence, a botanical garden, a former Confederate Veterans Home, a modern gift shop, a Confederate Soldier Museum, The Jefferson Davis Presidential Library and museum and a Confederate cemetery which includes the Tomb of the Unknown Confederate Soldier.  Beauvoir was almost completely destroyed by Hurricane Katrina but has been restored to its condition prior to the storm.
